Celebrities Rate with Blooming Cookies
ATLANTA - It was during a time when word of mouth had begun to work for
Blooming Cookies, and Chief Executive Officer and founder Ann King was
delivering a gift package to musician performing at a suburban lounge. As she
awaited intermission, a bemused spectator walked over and, noting the
cookie-laden gift package, said, "What a wonderful idea."
King
smiled at the bespectacled patron and said thanks. "Could I send one of those
to someone?" he asked and identified the recipient as Ray Stark, who was in
town producing a movie, "The Slugger's Wife." He described the package he
wanted and gave King Stark's Atlanta address.
"How do I pay?" he asked.
"Just send a check," said King.
When the check arrived it was signed by Neil Simon, the
heralded and award-winning writer who penned such acclaimed plays and movies as
"The Odd Couple," "Plaza Suite," "Brighton Street Memoirs," and "Biloxi Blues,"
among dozens of others.
"I never cashed it," said King. "I still have it."
It was the first real venture into the world of celebrities for King and
Blooming Cookies. Since then, she has filled and delivered orders - including
Christmas gifts - for such stars and
singers as Barbara Streisand and Madonna, heavyweight boxing champion Evander
Holyfield, University of Georgia Athletics Director Vince Dooley, Atlanta
Braves Manager Bobby Cox, actor Emilio Estevez,
newsman Bill Moyers and dozens of others.
Perhaps her most noticed went to Candace Bergen. That one
showed up on Bergen's wildly popular television show, "Murphy Brown," as a gift
to the main character's new born baby. The trademark cookies on a stem were
placed in Blooming Cookies' popular rocking horse.
"They hadn't thought of a weight for the baby," said King. "So, they used the
one I had printed on the rocking horse - seven pounds, two ounces. It got a lot
of play on the show, during the original showing and on re-runs. It was great."
Kings
first brush with celebrity was her own idea, when she requested that then
Atlanta Braves star outfielder Dale Murphy pose with her.
Murphy complied and asked for payment that a batch of cookies be delivered to
his home in nearby Lawrenceville. When the fledgling Blooming Cookies owner
called at the Murphy home, her knock at on the door was greeted by seven very
young and noisy boys, all of them hungry for her chocolate chip cookies.
"When I left, all of them had chocolate all over their mouths," said King,
laughing. "I found out later all seven kids belong to Dale and that he and
Nancy had eight babies before a little girl came along."
Since that time, Blooming Cookies packages have been sent to numerous stars,
among them:
-
Oprah Winfrey, who sent Ann an autographed photo
-
Streisand, for her 50th birthday
-
Movie producer Ray Stark for award-wining movies
-
Sophia Loren, who replied with an autographed photo
-
Holyfield, who was presented his gift by fellow boxer George
Foreman
-
Madonna, for her 40th birthday
Holyfield's
gift cookies extended out of a pair of boxing trunks, while Stark's contained
scanned photos from his hit movies, including "Steel Magnolias." For Madonna,
Blooming Cookies artists created a replica of the cross from her controversial
"Like a Prayer" album cover. Gary Trudeau, the cartoonist who
created "Doonesbury," sent a gift package to his mom for Mother's Day.
King and Blooming Cookies have sent gift packages to stars performing at
Atlanta's Chastain Park, and to other notables.
"That," said King, "is the fun part. I love dealing with celebrities. Being so
creative themselves, they really appreciate what we put into each package."
Blooming
Cookies, Inc. is a gift order catalog/Internet company based in Atlanta. It
features personalized containers and a variety of cookies designed and fitted
to special occasions. King came up with the idea in 1984 while watching
television as someone suggested chocolate strawberries as a gift idea. "Why not
cookies on a stem?" she asked herself and went into business the following day.
